Stagonian Madness!

For some inexplicable reason the Stagonians have decided to move through Saxe-Bearstein and Linz in support of Altmoranian aggression!

The Stagonians even advanced from Linz to Wein itself!

Stagonian columns pressed eastwards into Austrian Imperial holdings ~ both were repulsed!

In a battle lasting some only 1 hour General Brown routed the hapless Stagonians, even sending out enough pursuit forces to complete the surrender of the entire force after they had suffered some 55% casualties.

In another battle, east of the Tipplebruder region, General Charles forced a retreat of the attacking Stagonian armies, this battle taking only 90 minutes to conclude. No follow up was conducted as the Altmoranians had been successful in thier investiture of Pilsner, the capitol of Saxe-Bearstein.

The situation in central Urope is bleak for the opponents of Altmoranian aggression.

The Bearstein forces are all but destroyed in their defense of the capitol, Pilsner. General Dawn has also withdrawn in the face of superior Altmoranian numbers, now forming into defenses in Burtz, capitol of Burtzenia.

Saxe-Bearstein Faces first Prussian Putch

The Almoranian Forces have advanced with a massive move into Saxe-Bearstein

Unable to hold them back in the mountain passes the Bearstein troops retreated with casualties.

They have been joined in Pilsner (capitol of Saxe-Bearstein) by Butrzenia forces in great numbers with Kannon from Wein. Rumor has it that the Great Field Marshelle Daun is present with these forces.

Certainly a titanic early fight is brewing in Bearstein!

Scene: Imperial Palace in Wein.

Empress Merrie Teaser is preparing to enter the Grand Ballroom where a majority of the court awaits her arrival.

A page quickly steps forward with a note on a silver platter, the note is somewhat crumpled and dirty on the gleaming silver surface. The platter is offered to the Empress who glances at it then at the young aide de Camp of her Field Marshal Dawna, she nods to the young man to open the note.

He quickly takes the scrap of paper and only part way through digesting the information reports to the Empress,

"Field Marshal Dawna reports that her spies near the borders of Altmorania, Stagonia and Saxe-Bearstein have seen columns of troops both entering and assembling in Saxe-Bearstein and along the border regions. The Marshal writes that she fully expects Saxe-Bearstein to be invaded by the time your Majesty receives this note. Without a doubt King Freddy has initiated a war posture and means to invest our northern borders."

All assembled are silent, the Empress speaks quietly.

"Thank you M. aide de Camp." she adjusts her dress to smooth out the front.

"I shall compose an appropriate response after having entertained our ministers and court this evening." She looks about her in the small hallway at the entrance doors to the hall.

"None of you are to speak of this news." She lets out a calm breath and takes in another calm breath. "You may announce us now."

Austrians crush the Prussian left wing.

Prussian right wing maneuvers to attack, but the Prussian's loss on the left wing make the effort irrelevant.

The Prussian surge in the center is repulsed by the Austrians.

The Prussian center struggles to regroup.

Prussian cavalry reserve moves to support the Prussian right wing, but the effort is too little to late.

Reich Duke Wilhelm watches as the Austrian center repulse the Prussians.

Despite heavy casualties, the Austrian right wing decides the battle. A complete rout of the Prussians. Thirteen Prussian units were utterly destroyed, but the Austrians were too weak to pursue. They were pleased to hold the field.

Town's people cheer as Brigadier, Sir David Linienblatt, inhader of the Beerstein Honourable Pensioners, takes command of the Beerstein Foreign Legion. He will enter the Barony of Brewski and defend the River Ales approaches.

His force will include the Dun Haggis Highlanders, the Monte-Cristo Vivandieres, and the St. Pauli Pontooniers, who will span the River Ales to gain entry into the Barony of Alesgarden if necessary.

Sir David's force will also include three squadrons of cavalry and Bree's Battery.

Reich Duke Wilhelm envisions this legion to grow to four infantry battalions, two cavalry regiments and a battery of excellent artillery. Any nation wishing to volunteer a unit can be assured they will be provided the finest uniforms, flags, and equipment of the native country. President K. Rapp of the Republic of Neues Sudland has approved his 4th Regiment of Dragoons to serve as the senior regiment in our Foreign Legion. Reich Graf James reports that British, Hanoverian, and Dutch troops were massing on the border of our Protectorate; the Barony of Brewswick. Although the Prussians have long claimed ties to the Barony of Brewswick, the terms of their recent defeat precludes them from directly intervening in the Reich Duchy of Beerstein’s area of influence. Clearly the Prussians have sent their allies to do their bidding. While this disturbing report was immediately sent to the Reichstag for action, Reich Duke Wilhelm has ordered all military units to begin mobilizing.

I know that many of us are working from a mid 1700's time frame, working towards various 7 years war games using tricorned troops.

I have also been working on a 1809 based campaign and thought it might be interesting to establish something of a 'talk shop' here at Österreich Über Alles, which could represent the Aulic Council. A body of Imperial nobles and notables that 'counceled' the Imperial Court on matters military...

If any might be interested, the first order of discussion would be set in 1806...just after the Emperor has signed the Treaty of Pressburg, making peace with Bony the Ogre.

During their presentation, Empress Maria Theresa promoted Reich Duke Wilhelm to Field Marshal, invested him into her newly constituted Order of Maria Theresa, and proclaimed him "Lion of the Empire." Duchess Lynda was heard to say, "Thrice a knight at his age is something to behold."

Wilhelm II was elevated to Prinz and Baron von Brewswick. Austria, Prussia, and Russia all have claimed the mineral rich area and her appointment of Wilhelm II as Baron will no doubt raise the ire of Berlin and Moscow. Since Wilhelm II is still attending the University of Pabst Field Marshal Reich Duke Wilhelm will serve as "Reich Protector" against all adversaries!

Reich Duke Wilhelm wins Great Victory over dreaded Prussians at Blatzberg, Maj Gen von Coors vindicated

Maj Gen von Coors deployed his Corps of Observation in a strongly prepared position, in front of the village of Blatzberg, to await the on coming Prussians. Although greatly out numbered, he was willing to fight to the death until Reich Duke Wilhelm's reserves could come to the rescue. The Corps of Observation avoided battle for nearly a week while Maj Gen von Coors sought the perfect battlefield. Anchoring his right flank on the River Blatz and his left flank by dense forest, he positioned his infantry and artillery on the high ground. His cavalry and grenzers blocked the main road that could force him to retreat yet again. As the Prussians deployed, they were hampered by the narrow valley and strong position of the Beerstein troops. After several hours of deploying, they had no choice but to conduct a frontal attack. The first brigade was repulsed with heavy casualties forcing the second line to regroup before they could attack. In the meantime, Maj Gen von Coors' cavalry counterattacked capturing a battery and destroying a Grenadier unit. As the second line advanced, Reich Duke Wilhelm arrived on the field behind the Prussians. Panic ran through the Prussian army as their second attack also failed. Maj Gen von Coors watch as his cavalry captured a howitzer battery and engaged the Prussian Cuirassiers. As the Prussians tried to retreat back toward their supply line, Reich Duke Wilhelm's re-enforcements closed in. The Prussian Commander, realizing he had no were to go asked for terms. With minimal casualties, Wilhelm captured 12 Flags, 4 Standards, and three batteries. Maj Gen Kieth and his dispirited troops were paroled on written promise that none of the officers or troop would participate in any further hostilities against The Reich Duchy of Beerstein. For his courage, valor, and tenacity, Reich Duke Wilhelm invested Maj Gen von Coors into the Military Order of the Golden Crown, proclaimed him Baron von Blatzberg, and presented him with a local estate. Major Honking Thirst was recognized with a battlefield promoted to Colonel. General MacKay's artillery severely punished the advancing Prussian lines and was recognized for his exceptional skill. The unparalleled efforts of these heros presented the Reich Duchy of Beerstein it's greatest victory. Reich Duke Wilhelm proclaimed five days of thanksgiving and rejoicing! Beerstein Boys Defeat Dreaded Prussians at Alesgarden

Reich Duke Wilmhelm von Beerstein is pleased to announce his brave army soundly defeated the dreaded Prussians at Alesgarden! Although all Beerstein rejoyces, the battle was hard fought and their were many casualties. Baron von Brewski was killed while leading his valiant cuirassier brigade against the Prussian heavy cavalry. His son Col. Ludwig von Brewski led his Corona Cuirassiers in a desperate charge that forced the Prussian heavy cavalry back across the ford of the River Ales. Duke Wilhelm immediately promoted Ludwig to Brigadier of his fathers beloved Cuirassiers and invested him into the Order of the Goblet. Lugwig will hence be known as the Third Baron of Brewski. Generaloffizer Mckay's transfomation of our artillery was a major factor in our victory. He was invested into the Military Order of the Golden Crown, our highest award for victory, gallantry, and daring do on the field of battle. Gen der Brigade Lothar von Blutundedonner was serious wounded while leading his third gallant charge of the Dragoons. His brigade completely routed the Prussians who managed to cross the south bridge. Duke Wilhelm was so impressed he named Lother Baron von Alesgarden and he will be forever known as "Blutundedonner of Alesgarden."Lothar was invested into the Military Order of the Golden Crown and is recovering at the Duke's hunting Lodge. Duchess Lynda is also overseeing the medical treatment of General Picklemany who was thrown from his horse. Both generals are expected to fully recover, however, General von Blutundedonner may lose the sight in his right eye. General Picklemany's Hungarians were roughly handled with two units routing. The Warsteiner Fusiliers stood like a wall and covered the withdrawal of the rest of the brigade. General Picklemany's actions were instrumental in holding the line, and was invested into the Order of the Golden Crown. Another hero was General Lista who brought his brigade up just in the nick of time to save General Picklemany's Hungarians from being overrun. General Lista was invested into the Order of the Golden Crown and named Baron von Lista. The fighting was so difficult that Baron von Lista and General Picklemany's brigades were only able to pursue the routing Prussians as far as the River Ales. early dawn...home of minor noble family in Wein.

A decorated carriage rolled up to the front steps, the footman had leapt off the running board even before the horses had been reigned in. This footman holding his hat and wig on with one hand dashed up the steps and pulled the elaborate ringer.

He entered the home, while the horses stamped and champed sweating in the early morning air, no one else departed from the coach which had curtains drawn closed.

From the home another servant dashed, buttoning his coat quickly he smothed his coat-tails and approached the coachman at the reigns. With practiced grace he took the lead for the horses and stood by the front of the animals, producing a few apple pieces from a pocket so as to calm the animals more easily. The coachman then got down from the front and arranged the steps for the coach door.

All stood waiting for some time.

Presently from within the home a woman in a simple frock dress and a young man in a red military cut coat came out to the coach. Both of them deceded the stair and bowing low before the side of the coach waited for response.

"Robert." said a womans voice from within the coach, "Come in."

The young man looked to the older one in the simple dress next to him and smiling he entered the coach.

There was little room within the coach and Robert was face to face with Marsha, the Countess Dawn at the moment he entered.

"M..Majesty." he blurted out and tried to embrace her hand as quickly as he could upon entering the coach.

"Well Robert, you have been accepted and the Empress supports your decision." She had a sour look on her face. "I do not." Then she smiled...one of those smiles that can part the clouds on a rainy day. "I will be certain to send you off properly though!" She then embraced him quickly.

Robert was smiling and enjoying the embrace, when a male throat cleared outside the coach.

"Yes Countess," Robert managed to kiss her gloved hand this time better composed.

"Go fetch your needs and I will transport you to the court and your commissioning."

Robert had a confused look, Marsha, the Countess Dawn continued.

"Go, GO. Quickly now."

The smartly dressed young man then vaulted from the coach, nodding a greeting to his father, whom now turned a pale shade on seeing Marsha; he did not interrupt the man as he dashed up the stairs three at a time flying to his chambers.

"Prince Blade." Said Marsha, the Countess Dawn holding out a scrap of paper with a bright blue ribbon attached. "This is for you."

Taking the note the older man then carefully opened the note:

Prince Blade,

By the order of the Empress, Prince Axe request for attendance with The Prince of Wales Troop Depot has been granted.

Prince Axe is to travel at once with my agent.

Maj. General Done

The elder Prince nodded curtly to Countess Dawn, knowing of her favor with the Empress, he decided to only encourage the others of the family that were now appearing to see the strange visitor, to return into the home.

Prince Blade then embraced his son Robert before he boarded the coach, as his travel trunks were loaded by the puffing footman.

Military Maneuvers ... part one

Gideon Lewdon, newest Knight of Marie Teaser, surveyed the columns moving in the valley below.

His task was to break the Altmoranian siege of Oldmütz, currently being lead by their young arch-duke jungmeister "Fritz".

The fortifications would easily hold for the summer, whether or not they could weather all of autumn or into winter was another question altogether.

The Altmoranian attempt at storming had not worked and now siegeworks were in progress, ultimately the Altmoranians were also not ready for an extended siege it would seem as their heavy ordinance was not in place and the supplies for keeping such a large force static were going to have to run thru some mountain passes.

This was where Brigadier Lewdon came in, Maj. General Done had set him the task of harrassing these supplies. First the Hussars would have to work with local Jagers and Grenzer formations in determining the routes of Altmoranian supplies. Once these were found then his new columns could be brought into action!

Over on the EvE blog, there's been some interesting discussion about the Ottoman situation.
Now I've had another interesting idea ....

From the Baron V. Kluggelhande, representative of Frankszonia ....
Now since the real trouble obviously originates from the Grand Wazoo of Instant Bull, why don't we search for a connection with the P'Shaw of I Ran of Purses?
Also, I suspect that the Sultanate would be vulnerable to the agitations of provocateurs among not only the various subjugated peoples, such as the Geeks, but also among the various regional Bey and Beylerbegs who might find a bit of creative confusion in "complying with Imperial commands" quite profitable and liberating.
On the other hand, we must guard against the nefarious schemes of the Elector whose heretical leanings might lend itself to using the Turks in his own ambitions ... further, I suspect that we need to be alert for the ambitions of local potentates, such as Hesse-Homburg, siphoning away the Imperial forces for their own aggrandizement.

Indeed, I hope this gets copied back on the Oysterrich blog ...

These days, I don't actually own any of Duffy's books except for Fire and Stone which is temporarily inaccessible.
But
I remember reading at least one of his books on the Empress and her army ... and recall that there were also several factions we need to be aware of as wargamers ...
There was a sort of manipulator who tried to run the Empire for her singlehanded, whose name I forget ...
There were the few good generals, Brown and Daun being prominent that she relied upon for independent ideas.
There was some sort of military council which seemed dedicated to preserving whatever didn't work and inhibiting any effective innovations.
All this is quite dim ... suitable for me, I suppose, as my friends imply that I'm quite dim on occasion.
Now obviously, I'm playing more for the yucks than the solid history at the moment, so I'm not the guy to draw up a list ... and there is the roster of characters I created for the Wieners ...
How's about somebody drawing up a set of ministers or whatever and we each stake out a position ....
BTW, Frankszonia, while obviously loyal, wishes that the Germanians and Wieners would get their act together so the Gallians would go home ... on the other hand, we'd also LOVE to see everybody occupied with somebody nastier than us so we can quietly continue to enhance the qualities of local sovereignty ...

The land once known as the Banat of Torgoras is once more under our control and so we wait upon the border of Austria and Europa herself!
An ultimatum is being sent forth to Europa - if no ambassadors are forthcoming by the next Full Moon , accompanied by endeavours to surrender lands once more to us then we shall call the full force of our armies will be asked to meet, from all the ends of the earth, with a view to war !

Reichsexecution in Hess-Homburg

Part of a dispatch note from one:
Blei-Sammeln, Feldmarschallieutenant...stationed in Hess-Homburg

However, despite the Landgraf's legal exercising of the patents granting his family the right of independence from Homburg, the Imperial court in Vienna has declared a Reichsexecution against Hesse-Fedora and provided armies, funds, and a certain General von Blei-Sammeln to the court of Hesse-Homburg.

This would then form only the first of opportunities for 'well-placed' families to maneuver those 3rd and 4th sons into positions needed by the good Blei-Sammeln.

While the Wieners may not feel so inclined to direct their offspring into the greater Reich perchance a small force could be dispatched so as to ensure the 'proper' actions are taken with regard to this Hesse-Fedora?

4 Schottland Strasse Wein : home of the Obrist-Land-und-Haus Zeugamt

The two seater mule litter pulled up outside 44 Schottland Strasse. It was the start of another day's work for General von Mackay at the administration for ordinance and the arsenals ( obrist-land -und-haus zeugarant) .The General lept up the stairs and opened the highly polished door. A servant took his gloves and cane. Up the stairs to his office went the General and into the first door on the right. The daily cry of Cake and Coffee Herr General was met by the daily Of course Ludwig , and bring some for yourself !
It was an even more delightful confection than yesterday - a combination of the visual and taste sensations the staff had come to expect here at 44 Schottland Strasse.
The morning wore on with more coffee ,cake and more annual powder returns for the Grenzer Regiments - each written in almost unreadable script . Soon the Midday bells chimed from the Cathedral. The mule litter turned up outside and Von Mackay got himself ready for his next engagement - it had been a rather busy morning indeed.

Mackay wished he had a rich and successful patron to turn to. The Empress had posted him to command once more and he was in no hurry to return to active service. His glory days in the Turkish War of '37 had been eventful but that was then and this is now.Still how to avoid the joys of command.He would have to think well and fast.....

Well, I've decided that since Saxe-Bearstein occupies the area sometimes known as Bohemia and that the history I created for them began with an Italian Swiss mercenary unit (almost certainly Catholic) and that I've got some Grenzers in my army that I probably would be siding with Austria.

So, Saxe-Bearstein has joined the O.U.A. -- but that doesn't mean that they will always agree with it -- for example, our infantry wear red uniforms and are proud of it (our Swiss heritage and all that).
