Ein Appeal zu der Volksrad
My dear Cousins:
It has come to our attention that some consider Frankszonia to be an imperialist, aggressor state. This seems to have arisen due to our campaign to create a Super Sized Fry Stadt.
Ironically, this mis apprehension devolves from our desire to create a less plastic situation in which the dignity and freshness of our Folk is swallowed up by some six million strong ogre. Indeed, even though we in Frankszonia are ourselves perforce occupied by the Gallian hordes, one may notice that our struggles are often with our soi distant allies therein who have been caught undermining the autonomy of a local franchise.
Indeed, unlike other self proclaimed defenders of the Deutsche Mark, almost before the furor of conflict has fallen silent, the leaders of our neighbors have found themselves in the Frankfurter Bun, with the flavor of their office and authority enhanced rather than reduced.
Come, the Kreis are sounding for the defense of the Empress and our Graftsen. We are one Folk. Let us all go together in one Folk’s Wagon!
Sincerely,
Hzg. F v Frankfurter

Time Frame...?
I know that many of us are working from a mid 1700's time frame, working towards various 7 years war games using tricorned troops.
I have also been working on a 1809 based campaign and thought it might be interesting to establish something of a 'talk shop' here at Österreich Über Alles, which could represent the Aulic Council. A body of Imperial nobles and notables that 'counceled' the Imperial Court on matters military...
If any might be interested, the first order of discussion would be set in 1806...just after the Emperor has signed the Treaty of Pressburg, making peace with Bony the Ogre.

Empress Maria Theresa summons Reich Duke Wilhelm to Vienna
Wilhelm II was elevated to Prinz and Baron von Brewswick. Maj Gen Adolph von Coors Baron von Blatzberg, Maj Gen Lother Blunderdonner Baron von Alesgarden, General Pickelmany, Generaloffizer Mackay, and General Lista Baron von Lista were all invested into the Order of the Golden Fleece and named Reich Graf (Count of the Empire). Colonel Honking Thirst was also invested into the Order of the Golden Fleece and presented a regiment of his choice.
In a private audiance, Empress Maria Theresa explained that the Barony of Brewswick is a very contentious province. Austria, Prussia, and Russia all have claimed the mineral rich area and her appointment of Wilhelm II as Baron will no doubt raise the ire of Berlin and Moscow. Since Wilhelm II is still attending the University of Pabst Field Marshal Reich Duke Wilhelm will serve as "Reich Protector" against all adversaries!

On the Border...
The Austrian Military Border- Sunday morning , mist sweeps across the heath outwith the military settlement...
Two battle hardened veterans converse as they mount guard on a typical Sunday morning. They talk of the price of pigs, target practice, the merits of Orthodoxy and rumours of a new officer being sent all the way from Vienna who is due to arrive tomorrow. A crack causes them to turn round only to see wood pigeons taking off and alighting once more...

intrigues
In recent battles, Frankszonian forces have fought against Vile Stagonia, Hesse Homburg, and other loyal Imperial / Reich stadts. Furthermore, they note that the economic rivalry between Frankfurters and Wieners continues unabated.
Is some plot to discipline the rash Gallian puppet Hurtzhog in progress?

Prinz Robert (the) Axe
A decorated carriage rolled up to the front steps, the footman had leapt off the running board even before the horses had been reigned in. This footman holding his hat and wig on with one hand dashed up the steps and pulled the elaborate ringer.
He entered the home, while the horses stamped and champed sweating in the early morning air, no one else departed from the coach which had curtains drawn closed.
From the home another servant dashed, buttoning his coat quickly he smothed his coat-tails and approached the coachman at the reigns. With practiced grace he took the lead for the horses and stood by the front of the animals, producing a few apple pieces from a pocket so as to calm the animals more easily. The coachman then got down from the front and arranged the steps for the coach door.
All stood waiting for some time.
...
Presently from within the home a woman in a simple frock dress and a young man in a red military cut coat came out to the coach. Both of them deceded the stair and bowing low before the side of the coach waited for response.
"Robert." said a womans voice from within the coach, "Come in."
The young man looked to the older one in the simple dress next to him and smiling he entered the coach.
There was little room within the coach and Robert was face to face with Marsha, the Countess Dawn at the moment he entered.
"M..Majesty." he blurted out and tried to embrace her hand as quickly as he could upon entering the coach.
"Well Robert, you have been accepted and the Empress supports your decision." She had a sour look on her face. "I do not." Then she smiled...one of those smiles that can part the clouds on a rainy day. "I will be certain to send you off properly though!" She then embraced him quickly.
Robert was smiling and enjoying the embrace, when a male throat cleared outside the coach.
"Yes Countess," Robert managed to kiss her gloved hand this time better composed.
"Go fetch your needs and I will transport you to the court and your commissioning."
Robert had a confused look, Marsha, the Countess Dawn continued.
"Go, GO. Quickly now."
The smartly dressed young man then vaulted from the coach, nodding a greeting to his father, whom now turned a pale shade on seeing Marsha; he did not interrupt the man as he dashed up the stairs three at a time flying to his chambers.
"Prince Blade." Said Marsha, the Countess Dawn holding out a scrap of paper with a bright blue ribbon attached. "This is for you."
Taking the note the older man then carefully opened the note:
Prince Blade,
By the order of the Empress, Prince Axe request for attendance with The Prince of Wales Troop Depot has been granted.
Prince Axe is to travel at once with my agent.
Maj. General Done
The elder Prince nodded curtly to Countess Dawn, knowing of her favor with the Empress, he decided to only encourage the others of the family that were now appearing to see the strange visitor, to return into the home.
Prince Blade then embraced his son Robert before he boarded the coach, as his travel trunks were loaded by the puffing footman.

Military Maneuvers ... part one
His task was to break the Altmoranian siege of Oldmütz, currently being lead by their young arch-duke jungmeister "Fritz".
The fortifications would easily hold for the summer, whether or not they could weather all of autumn or into winter was another question altogether.
The Altmoranian attempt at storming had not worked and now siegeworks were in progress, ultimately the Altmoranians were also not ready for an extended siege it would seem as their heavy ordinance was not in place and the supplies for keeping such a large force static were going to have to run thru some mountain passes.
This was where Brigadier Lewdon came in, Maj. General Done had set him the task of harrassing these supplies. First the Hussars would have to work with local Jagers and Grenzer formations in determining the routes of Altmoranian supplies. Once these were found then his new columns could be brought into action!

Interesting developments
Now I've had another interesting idea ....
From the Baron V. Kluggelhande, representative of Frankszonia ....
Now since the real trouble obviously originates from the Grand Wazoo of Instant Bull, why don't we search for a connection with the P'Shaw of I Ran of Purses?
Also, I suspect that the Sultanate would be vulnerable to the agitations of provocateurs among not only the various subjugated peoples, such as the Geeks, but also among the various regional Bey and Beylerbegs who might find a bit of creative confusion in "complying with Imperial commands" quite profitable and liberating.
On the other hand, we must guard against the nefarious schemes of the Elector whose heretical leanings might lend itself to using the Turks in his own ambitions ... further, I suspect that we need to be alert for the ambitions of local potentates, such as Hesse-Homburg, siphoning away the Imperial forces for their own aggrandizement.

Who's on First?
(actually, two, the first one of which pointed out that no single player seems to be playing the Empire at the moment).
In my reading of the 'near end' of the Habsburg 'empire' there were at least 4 factions vieing for control of the Imperial Court.
The Empress' was generally neutral, wiht a mind to using less absolutist means to gaining control, or at least influence, in the European courts outside Vienna. She would rather have used marriages (in the Feudal tradition) and open alliances rather than the, relatively newer, written treaties.
The Hawks were ready to fight -> seemingly all the time to gain their ends.
The Doves held sway over much of the populace and they also tended to support the Empress in 'slower' (read older) diplomatic methods.
The Absolutists, a bit of a mixed bag really, but primarily concerned with maintaining the supremacy of the Catholic faith and in keeping the 'monarchic' rule in power. This small and politically nebulous group could switch from Hawks to Empress to Dove's factions as fast as a battaltion can load and fire.
I say all this to point out the difficulty in having a 'single' entity 'speaking' for Austria, quite often the Historical Austria was speaking out of three sides of its collective mouth at the same time!
March 29, 2008 8:42 AM
to which I reply: ;
Perhaps, I think we each should take the role of one of the ministers etc. at the Imperial court then ....
Indeed, I hope this gets copied back on the Oysterrich blog ...
These days, I don't actually own any of Duffy's books except for Fire and Stone which is temporarily inaccessible.
But
I remember reading at least one of his books on the Empress and her army ... and recall that there were also several factions we need to be aware of as wargamers ...
There was a sort of manipulator who tried to run the Empire for her singlehanded, whose name I forget ...
There were the few good generals, Brown and Daun being prominent that she relied upon for independent ideas.
There was some sort of military council which seemed dedicated to preserving whatever didn't work and inhibiting any effective innovations.
All this is quite dim ... suitable for me, I suppose, as my friends imply that I'm quite dim on occasion.
Now obviously, I'm playing more for the yucks than the solid history at the moment, so I'm not the guy to draw up a list ... and there is the roster of characters I created for the Wieners ...
How's about somebody drawing up a set of ministers or whatever and we each stake out a position ....
BTW, Frankszonia, while obviously loyal, wishes that the Germanians and Wieners would get their act together so the Gallians would go home ... on the other hand, we'd also LOVE to see everybody occupied with somebody nastier than us so we can quietly continue to enhance the qualities of local sovereignty ...
:)

Some thoughts about the Vienna Court...

This means that we...all of the posting contributors to Österreich Über Alles, whom may have some current active interest in the story(ies) unfolding should feel free to place some of their thoughts and action plans into being here on Österreich Über Alles -> if only so that the others can either bugger it up, ignore it, join in with it and really mess things up, or start on a pathway of their own!

A letter
To their florivorios Majesties of Europa,
Greetings in the name of Right ! To her fragrentness blossom Maria Theresa and the heads of states insignificant and petty I send the greetings of my master Mustapha Sultan of the East and master of all!
I write,once more and with the greatest urgency demanding that ambassadors be appointed and sent forthwith to His Excellency's Palace in Istanbul that relations may be made known regarding the handing over of what land is rightly ours since 1739! We have waited long and desire only peace and land that is our by Laws divine and human! The land once known as the Banat of Torgoras is once more under our control and so we wait upon the border of Austria and Europa herself!
An ultimatum is being sent forth to Europa - if no ambassadors are forthcoming by the next Full Moon , accompanied by endeavours to surrender lands once more to us then we shall call the full force of our armies will be asked to meet, from all the ends of the earth, with a view to war !
We wish peace and justice to flow between our lands and Europa as well as the Eastern territories of the Austrian Empire to be ours once more . Failure to do so will regretfully mean the sounding of the shrill flute of conquest! That which was stopped at the gates of Vienna will not be stopped this time!
Respectfully
Evidya Secretary to the Vizier- blessed be his name for ever!

Reichsexecution in Hess-Homburg
Blei-Sammeln, Feldmarschallieutenant...stationed in Hess-Homburg
However, despite the Landgraf's legal exercising of the patents granting his family the right of independence from Homburg, the Imperial court in Vienna has declared a Reichsexecution against Hesse-Fedora and provided armies, funds, and a certain General von Blei-Sammeln to the court of Hesse-Homburg.
This would then form only the first of opportunities for 'well-placed' families to maneuver those 3rd and 4th sons into positions needed by the good Blei-Sammeln.
While the Wieners may not feel so inclined to direct their offspring into the greater Reich perchance a small force could be dispatched so as to ensure the 'proper' actions are taken with regard to this Hesse-Fedora?

General Mackay
The two seater mule litter pulled up outside 44 Schottland Strasse. It was the start of another day's work for General von Mackay at the administration for ordinance and the arsenals ( obrist-land -und-haus zeugarant) .The General lept up the stairs and opened the highly polished door. A servant took his gloves and cane. Up the stairs to his office went the General and into the first door on the right. The daily cry of Cake and Coffee Herr General was met by the daily Of course Ludwig , and bring some for yourself !
It was an even more delightful confection than yesterday - a combination of the visual and taste sensations the staff had come to expect here at 44 Schottland Strasse.
The morning wore on with more coffee ,cake and more annual powder returns for the Grenzer Regiments - each written in almost unreadable script . Soon the Midday bells chimed from the Cathedral. The mule litter turned up outside and Von Mackay got himself ready for his next engagement - it had been a rather busy morning indeed.

Wien participates:
I'm going to have start a new blog anyway, I'd guess ...
But here's the primary people for the Weiners, who are the major competition for the Frankfurters ...
B: Wieners:
* Empress Teaser Hopsbier (flirtatious and tends to throw expensive parties, but really
cherishes her folks ... and her soldiers, especially the tall, young, athletic ones) ...
* Her protégé: Marsha, the Countess Dawn, considered by most to be an harmless coquette (who actually is a brilliant military tactician) who masquerades as a man in order to be:
* Maj. General Done: (2) Seems reserved and standoffish to his staff. He is extremely private
in his personal life and upholds very high standards of behavior. However, he often is
mysteriously gone when not on active campaign, and at these times nobody knows where he is.
He is known to be a confidante of the Empress and very influential in her program of military
reform.
* Feld Marshal Brownale (2) Boisterous and enthusiastic when in contact with the enemy. His
enthusiasm is shared with the troops with whom he likes to unofficially socialize. Has a
reputation for being able to rally units and to encourage dangerous assaults. He is a friend of Gen
Woad, the Baron Sipcup, or is that Hiccup?
* Prinz Joesipper: (0) hangs out with the cafe crowd. \
* Oberst Hasenpfeffer: (0) Impatient and peppery.
* Oberst Katzenhaus: (1) has also risen in the Wiener ranks due to exceptional services rendered.
* M. Gen. Schnitzelen: (0) classic case of prospering by being kicked upstairs.
* Oberst Spam: (0) is raising a jaeger regiment which he intends to flood into hostile areas.
* Waddle: (0)
* Schlogger: (0)
* Snorzen: (1) (a Baltic SoF)
* Wilhelm von Shlickt (1) : A freikorps leader, he avoids open combat.
His dubious reputation in small wars leaves a stain on the honor of the army ... Likes cigars.
A real Wiener ....
** Unfortunately, I did not get the citation for these, but I was reading something on the net and
ran across Graf Otto von Botelauden and Henrich Wallpot von Passenheim. So ...
* Graf Blotto von Bottleladen: (0) Middle aged, subject to wild mood swings, uses a prince nez
as it reminds him of the view through the bottom of the bottle or stein. While flagrantly
promiscuous on campaign, when at home or on any non-combat mission is notoriously
passionate about family and Frau. Actually, his income is derived more from a successful
tavern and inn chain / franchise than from the minuscule hereditary lands.
und ....
* Ernst Hallpot von Pissenhelm.: (1) soldier of fortune. Works on time limited capitularies
only. While rigorously loyal during period of contract, he has been known to refuse renewals at
the last moment. Otherwise, a good jack of all trades militarily. He has excelled at organizing
supply trains, depots, and hospitals. Details of his lineage seem curiously fluid.
* Riergard v. Rottenbrat: (0) Irritable, duelist, pettifogging administrator.
* Picklemany (2): Competent. Good leader, but tends to be conservative in approach to
campaigns
* Blumentwit: (0) (Inspired by real, WWII German, Blumentrit).
* Grimsnifter (0)
* Sauerputz (0)
The Hungry forces include:
* Gen. Naggy (1)
* Eaterhasty: (1)
